The radio we plan to use on the ground is a Kenwood TM-D700. This product has a built in TNC and has given us the best distance so far. It has a built in display which allows us to view incoming APRS information realtime. It also has a serial output which will allow us to connect it to a computer and feed real time gps tracking information to the tracking software.

We also worked with a handheld receiver with audio outputs to a sound card. The receiver was a Vertex VX-150 and the software we used as a TNC was MixW. This combination seemed to work well, but did not decipher APRS information as fas as the Kenwood seems to.
